What Is OCD?
Obsessive-compulsive disorder is a mental health condition characterized by recurring obsessions, compulsions, or both. Obsessions are unwanted and intrusive thoughts, images, urges, or fears that cause significant distress. Compulsions are repetitive behaviors or mental rituals a person feels driven to perform in response to those thoughts or feelings.
OCD can look different from one person to another. Some individuals may repeatedly check locks, appliances, emails, or other things because they fear something bad could happen. Others may experience contamination concerns and feel compelled to wash, clean, or avoid certain situations.
OCD can also involve less visible symptoms. A person may experience intrusive thoughts, seek reassurance, mentally review past events, repeatedly analyze conversations, or perform other mental rituals without anyone around them realizing what is happening.
This is one reason professional evaluation can be so important. OCD is not simply being particular, organized, cautious, or worried. It is a condition that can create a cycle of anxiety and compulsive responses that becomes increasingly disruptive over time.
Recognizing the Signs of OCD
OCD symptoms may take many forms, and they are not always obvious. Common obsessions can involve fears about contamination, illness, making mistakes, harming someone, losing control, relationships, morality, or uncertainty.
Compulsions may include:
- Excessive checking
- Washing or cleaning
- Repeating words, actions, or routines
- Seeking reassurance
- Avoiding certain people, places, or situations
- Counting or arranging things
- Mentally reviewing events
- Repeating thoughts or phrases in the mind
- Trying to achieve a feeling of certainty
- Performing rituals to prevent a feared outcome
For some people, the compulsions are physical. For others, they are primarily mental.
If OCD symptoms are taking significant amounts of time, creating distress, or interfering with your ability to live normally, it may be time to speak with a mental health professional.
OCD Treatment in Washington, DC
At Access Health Services, we believe effective OCD treatment starts with understanding the individual behind the symptoms. There is no single experience of OCD, which means treatment should be tailored to the person’s concerns, symptom patterns, goals, and overall mental health.
A comprehensive treatment plan may involve psychotherapy, medication management, or a combination of approaches when clinically appropriate.
One of the most established behavioral approaches for OCD is Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP). ERP is a specialized form of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) that has strong evidence supporting its use for OCD.
ERP involves gradually facing situations, thoughts, images, or other triggers that contribute to OCD symptoms while learning not to respond with the usual compulsive behavior. This process is structured and individualized rather than forcing someone into situations they are not prepared to handle.
The goal is not simply to make anxiety disappear. Instead, treatment helps individuals develop the ability to experience uncomfortable thoughts and feelings without automatically responding with rituals, avoidance, or reassurance seeking.
Over time, this can help break the cycle that keeps OCD symptoms going.
How ERP Can Help With OCD
One of the most frustrating parts of OCD is the temporary relief that compulsions can provide. A person may check something because they feel uncertain. Once they check, their anxiety may decrease briefly. But the doubt eventually returns, creating another reason to check.
This can develop into a repeating cycle:
Intrusive thought → anxiety or uncertainty → compulsion → temporary relief → intrusive thought returns.
ERP works to interrupt that cycle.
During treatment, an OCD therapist works with the individual to identify specific triggers and develop gradual exposure exercises. The person then practices facing those triggers while resisting the compulsive response.
ERP can be challenging, but it is designed to be collaborative and paced according to the individual’s needs. The International OCD Foundation identifies ERP as a first-line psychological treatment for OCD.
When to Consider an OCD Psychiatrist in DC
For some individuals, therapy may be an important part of OCD treatment, while others may benefit from medication management as well. If medication is appropriate, working with an OCD psychiatrist in DC can provide an opportunity to discuss symptoms, treatment history, medications, side effects, and other factors that may influence care.
Medications commonly used to treat OCD include selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Medication treatment should always be individualized and monitored by an appropriately qualified healthcare professional. The International OCD Foundation identifies SSRIs as first-line medication options for OCD.
Medication does not necessarily replace therapy. For some individuals, medication and evidence-based psychotherapy may work together as part of a comprehensive treatment plan.
At Access Health Services, we can help evaluate your individual needs and determine what type of care may be appropriate.
OCD Can Affect More Than Your Daily Routine
OCD does not always stay confined to one area of life. When symptoms become persistent, they can affect relationships, employment, academic performance, social activities, and overall quality of life.
For example, someone may spend significant time checking their work because they are afraid of making a mistake. Another person may avoid social situations because of intrusive thoughts or contamination fears. Someone else may struggle to make decisions because OCD creates an overwhelming need for certainty.
These experiences can be exhausting.
It is also common for people with OCD to feel embarrassed or ashamed about their intrusive thoughts. Having an unwanted thought does not mean you want that thought to happen, nor does an intrusive thought define your character. Understanding the difference between an intrusive thought and an intention can be an important part of receiving appropriate care.
Finding OCD Specialists in Washington, DC
When searching for OCD specialists in Washington, DC, it is important to consider experience with OCD-specific treatment rather than assuming that every form of traditional talk therapy will address OCD in the same way.
OCD treatment often requires specialized knowledge of obsessive thoughts, compulsive behaviors, avoidance, reassurance seeking, mental rituals, and the ways these patterns reinforce one another. The International OCD Foundation recommends looking for providers with appropriate training and experience in evidence-based OCD treatment, including ERP.
At Access Health Services, we take the time to understand what you are experiencing rather than reducing your concerns to a label. Our approach focuses on providing thoughtful, professional mental health care while helping you identify practical next steps.
What to Expect From DC OCD Treatment
Starting treatment can feel intimidating, particularly if OCD has convinced you that certain thoughts or situations are dangerous. You do not have to have everything figured out before reaching out.
An initial evaluation may focus on understanding your symptoms, how long they have been occurring, how they affect your daily life, and what you have already tried. Your provider may also discuss other mental health concerns that can occur alongside OCD and consider how those concerns may influence treatment.
From there, your treatment plan can be adjusted as you make progress.
Treatment is not about achieving perfection or eliminating every unwanted thought. Intrusive thoughts are a normal part of being human. The goal is to reduce the power OCD has over your choices and help you respond differently when obsessive thoughts or anxiety arise.

I've been using their services for years after being referred by a cardiologist. Since the pandemic, having access to tele appointments has been wonderful and convenient! It can take a while to find the right meds or combination of meds that work for you, but once you're able to identify that, the frequency of appointments and length of appointments does go down. At this point, it's relatively routine, painless, and convenient to maintain my prescriptions through tele-appointments. Dr. A listens to your concerns and isn't dismissive like some other doctors can be, which is really appreciated!
