Understanding ADHD in Adults
ADHD, or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, is a neurodevelopmental condition that can continue from childhood into adulthood. While ADHD is often associated with children who have difficulty sitting still or paying attention in school, adult ADHD can look very different.
Adults may experience problems with organization, time management, sustained attention, task completion, impulsivity, or restlessness. Some people may spend years developing strategies to compensate for these challenges before realizing that ADHD could be contributing to them.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, ADHD symptoms can change throughout a person’s life and may become particularly noticeable when the demands of work, relationships, and daily responsibilities increase.
For someone living in Washington, DC, the demands of a busy professional and personal life can make untreated ADHD especially frustrating. You may know exactly what you need to do but struggle to get started. You may begin several projects without finishing them, regularly underestimate how long tasks will take, or have difficulty keeping track of details.
These experiences do not necessarily mean someone has ADHD, but they can be reasons to speak with a qualified mental health professional about an evaluation.
ADHD Treatment Washington, DC Through Telehealth
Finding mental health care should not require rearranging your entire schedule. For individuals seeking ADHD treatment Washington DC, telehealth provides an alternative to traditional in-person appointments.
At Access Health Services, our telehealth and telepsychiatry model allows eligible patients to meet with providers virtually from a private, convenient location. Instead of spending time driving to an appointment, finding parking, or sitting in a waiting room, you can connect with your provider online.
Telehealth can be particularly helpful for ADHD care because treatment is often ongoing. Medication management may involve regular follow-up appointments, while therapy can benefit from consistent sessions over time. Virtual care can make it easier to maintain that continuity.
The National Institute of Mental Health notes that virtual mental health services can include assessments, treatment planning, therapy, medication prescriptions, and regular follow-up care. It also recognizes telehealth as an effective option for treating conditions including ADHD.
For patients in Washington, DC, this means ADHD care can fit more naturally into an already busy schedule.
ADHD Medication Management
Medication is one of the most common components of ADHD treatment Washington DC. However, medication management is not simply about receiving a prescription. Finding an appropriate medication and dose requires ongoing communication and monitoring.
At Access Health Services, our ADHD medication management approach is focused on your individual symptoms, treatment goals, medical history, and response to medication.
ADHD medications can include stimulant and non-stimulant options. Stimulant medications are commonly used to treat ADHD, but they are not the right choice for everyone. Non-stimulant medications may be considered depending on a person’s circumstances and treatment needs.
Medication management may involve discussing questions such as:
- Are your ADHD symptoms improving?
- Are you able to focus more consistently?
- Are you completing tasks more easily?
- Are you experiencing unwanted side effects?
- Does the medication last long enough throughout the day?
- Are your current dose and medication still appropriate?
- Are other symptoms affecting your ability to function?
These conversations are important because ADHD treatment is not necessarily a one-size-fits-all process. Some individuals respond well to their first medication, while others may need adjustments or different approaches.
The goal is to find a treatment strategy that supports functioning while taking your overall health and circumstances into consideration.
ADHD Therapy in Washington, DC
Medication can be helpful for managing ADHD symptoms, but therapy can provide another important part of treatment. ADHD therapy in Washington, DC can help individuals better understand their symptoms and develop practical strategies for managing everyday challenges.
At Access Health Services, therapy can be incorporated into an individualized treatment plan based on your needs.
For adults with ADHD, therapy may focus on areas such as:
- Time management
- Organization and planning
- Procrastination
- Emotional regulation
- Managing stress
- Improving communication
- Developing routines
- Managing work-related challenges
- Building healthier habits
- Improving confidence and self-esteem
- Coping with frustration and overwhelm
Cognitive behavioral therapy, often called CBT, is one therapeutic approach that may be helpful for adults with ADHD. Therapy can help individuals identify patterns that are getting in the way of their goals and work toward more practical, sustainable strategies.
The National Institute of Mental Health recognizes psychotherapy, including behavioral and cognitive behavioral approaches, as a common treatment option for adults with ADHD.
Why Combine ADHD Medication and Therapy?
For some people, the most effective approach involves both medication management and therapy.
Medication may help reduce core ADHD symptoms, while therapy can help you build skills for handling the everyday consequences of those symptoms. For example, medication may make it easier to concentrate, while therapy can help you establish a realistic system for managing deadlines, responsibilities, and routines.
Treatment does not have to be limited to one approach. According to NIMH, effective ADHD treatment for adults may involve a combination of medication and psychotherapy, and some individuals may need to try different approaches before finding what works best for them.
At Access Health Services, we recognize that every patient has different goals. Some people may primarily need medication management. Others may benefit from therapy, while some may prefer a combination of services.
Our role is to help you determine what type of support makes sense for your individual situation.
What to Expect From Telepsychiatry for ADHD
If you have never used telepsychiatry before, the process may feel unfamiliar. In reality, virtual ADHD care can be very similar to an in-person appointment.
During an initial appointment, a provider may discuss your symptoms, personal history, current concerns, previous treatment, medications, and goals. An ADHD evaluation may also involve looking at whether symptoms began during childhood and how they affect different areas of your life.
Adult ADHD diagnosis requires more than simply experiencing occasional difficulty concentrating. Symptoms need to be persistent and significantly affect functioning. Providers may also consider other conditions that can cause similar symptoms, including anxiety, depression, sleep problems, or other medical concerns.
Once your provider has a clearer understanding of your concerns, they can discuss appropriate treatment options and whether medication management, therapy, or both may be appropriate.
Follow-up appointments provide an opportunity to evaluate your progress and make adjustments when needed.

ADHD Treatment Should Be Built Around You
There is no single ADHD treatment plan that works for everyone. Symptoms, responsibilities, medical histories, treatment experiences, and goals can all vary significantly from one person to another.

I've been using their services for years after being referred by a cardiologist. Since the pandemic, having access to tele appointments has been wonderful and convenient! It can take a while to find the right meds or combination of meds that work for you, but once you're able to identify that, the frequency of appointments and length of appointments does go down. At this point, it's relatively routine, painless, and convenient to maintain my prescriptions through tele-appointments. Dr. A listens to your concerns and isn't dismissive like some other doctors can be, which is really appreciated!
