Addiction Treatment in Washington, DC

Finding the right support for addiction can feel overwhelming, especially when substance use has started affecting your relationships, work, health, or everyday life. At Access Health Services, we understand that asking for help is a personal decision, and we believe treatment should be approached with compassion, respect, and without judgment. Our goal is to help individuals in Washington, DC better understand what they are experiencing and connect with the mental health support they need to move toward healthier patterns and long-term recovery.

Addiction is more than simply making a poor choice or lacking willpower. Substance use disorders are complex health conditions that can affect the brain, behavior, relationships, and overall well-being. With the right treatment and ongoing support, recovery is possible. SAMHSA recognizes substance use disorders as treatable health conditions and notes that treatment may involve a combination of behavioral therapies, medications, and recovery support depending on the individual’s needs.

For individuals looking for addiction treatment in Washington, DC, we provide a supportive setting where concerns about substance use can be discussed openly and professionally. We take the time to understand each person’s circumstances rather than assuming that one treatment approach will work for everyone.

Understanding Addiction and Substance Use Disorders

Substance use can look different from person to person. Someone may begin using alcohol or drugs recreationally and gradually find that it becomes more difficult to control. Others may turn to substances while coping with anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, or another mental health concern.

Over time, substance use may begin interfering with important areas of life. You may notice that you are spending more time thinking about using, using more than you intended, struggling to cut back, or continuing to use despite negative consequences. Family members or friends may also express concern about changes they have noticed.

A substance use disorder does not have to reach a severe stage before someone deserves help. Early support can give a person an opportunity to understand their relationship with substances and consider healthier ways to cope.

At Access Health Services, we look at the person as a whole. We want to understand not only what substances may be involved, but also what may be contributing to the pattern of use and how it is affecting the individual’s mental and emotional health.

Addiction Treatment in Washington, DC Should Be Individualized

There is no single path to recovery. Some individuals may benefit from regular outpatient therapy, while others may need a more intensive treatment program or medical support. SAMHSA explains that treatment settings can include outpatient, inpatient, and residential care, with the appropriate level depending on a person’s needs.

Our role at Access Health Services is to evaluate your concerns and help determine what type of behavioral health support may be appropriate. Depending on your situation, treatment may involve individual therapy, psychiatric care, medication management, referrals, or coordination with other providers.

We also recognize that recovery is not always linear. A person’s needs can change over time, and their treatment plan may need to change with them. If a particular approach is not working, that does not mean recovery is impossible. It may simply mean that the current plan needs to be reconsidered.

Drug Addiction Treatment in Washington, DC

Drug addiction can involve many different substances, including opioids, stimulants, sedatives, cannabis, and other drugs. Each substance can affect the body and mind differently, which is one reason individualized treatment matters.

When someone is looking for drug addiction treatment in Washington, DC, it is important to consider more than simply stopping substance use. Treatment should also address the factors that may be making recovery difficult.

For some individuals, substance use may be connected with untreated anxiety or depression. Others may be coping with trauma, difficult relationships, chronic stress, or significant life changes. Some people may have been using substances as a way to temporarily manage uncomfortable emotions without realizing how dependent they have become on that coping strategy.

Therapy can provide an opportunity to identify these patterns and work toward healthier alternatives. It can also help individuals develop skills for managing stress, recognizing triggers, improving relationships, and making decisions that support their recovery.

The Connection Between Addiction and Mental Health

Substance use and mental health concerns frequently overlap. A person may use alcohol or drugs to cope with anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep problems, or other emotional concerns. At the same time, ongoing substance use can make existing mental health symptoms more difficult to manage.

This is why addressing only the substance use may not always be enough.

At Access Health Services, we consider the relationship between mental health and substance use when developing a treatment plan. When appropriate, addressing both concerns together can provide a more complete approach to care.

For example, someone experiencing depression may use alcohol to temporarily escape feelings of sadness or hopelessness. Someone dealing with anxiety may rely on substances to feel more relaxed in social situations. Another individual may use substances to cope with traumatic experiences.

Understanding these connections can be an important part of treatment. Instead of focusing only on what someone is doing, we work toward understanding why those behaviors may have developed and what can be done differently moving forward.

What Can Addiction Recovery Look Like?

Addiction recovery in Washington, DC does not have to look the same for everyone. Recovery may involve reducing or stopping substance use, learning how to manage cravings, rebuilding relationships, returning to work or school, improving physical and mental health, or simply feeling more in control of everyday life.

Recovery is also about more than avoiding substances. It can involve developing a healthier routine, improving emotional regulation, building supportive relationships, and finding ways to handle difficult situations without returning to old coping patterns.

SAMHSA describes recovery as an ongoing process in which individuals work toward improved health and wellness, greater self-direction, and reaching their potential.

We believe that progress should be measured in a way that makes sense for the individual. For one person, progress may mean recognizing a trigger before acting on it. For another, it may mean attending therapy consistently or repairing an important relationship. Small changes can become meaningful parts of a larger recovery process.

Therapy and Behavioral Support for Addiction

Therapy can be an important part of addiction treatment because it gives individuals a place to talk honestly about their experiences and work through the challenges that may be connected to substance use.

During therapy, individuals may explore triggers, thoughts, emotions, relationships, stress, past experiences, and behaviors that contribute to substance use. Treatment can also focus on developing healthier coping strategies and recognizing situations that may increase the risk of returning to substance use.

Our approach is centered on meeting people where they are. We understand that someone may feel embarrassed, uncertain, frustrated, or even unsure whether they truly need treatment. You do not have to have everything figured out before reaching out.

The first step can simply be having a conversation about what has been happening.

Medication and Addiction Treatment

For certain substance use disorders, medication may be part of a comprehensive treatment plan. Medication is not appropriate for everyone, and decisions about medication should be made with a qualified healthcare professional based on the individual’s health, substance use history, symptoms, and treatment goals.

For example, SAMHSA identifies medications such as buprenorphine, methadone, and naltrexone as evidence-based medications used in the treatment of opioid use disorder. Medications including acamprosate, disulfiram, and naltrexone may also be used for alcohol use disorder. These medications can be used alongside counseling and other behavioral supports.

At Access Health Services, we can evaluate your mental health and treatment needs and help determine what type of care may be appropriate. When a person requires services outside of our scope or needs a higher level of addiction care, we can also help connect them with appropriate resources.

When Should You Consider Addiction Treatment?

You do not have to wait until substance use has completely disrupted your life before seeking help.

It may be worth speaking with a mental health professional if you:

  • Feel unable to control your substance use
  • Have tried to stop or cut back but continue using
  • Spend significant time thinking about obtaining or using substances
  • Continue using despite problems at work, home, or in relationships
  • Use substances to cope with difficult emotions
  • Experience cravings that are difficult to manage
  • Notice changes in your mood, behavior, or relationships related to substance use
  • Are concerned about a loved one’s substance use
  • Want support maintaining recovery after stopping substance use

These experiences do not mean that someone is weak or that they have failed. They may simply be signs that additional support could be helpful.

I've been using their services for years after being referred by a cardiologist. Since the pandemic, having access to tele appointments has been wonderful and convenient! It can take a while to find the right meds or combination of meds that work for you, but once you're able to identify that, the frequency of appointments and length of appointments does go down. At this point, it's relatively routine, painless, and convenient to maintain my prescriptions through tele-appointments. Dr. A listens to your concerns and isn't dismissive like some other doctors can be, which is really appreciated!
